I can has snowday?

December 16, 2007

I started hearing earlier in the week that it was going to storm this weekend.  I got all excited then realised this wasn’t the right weekend for a snowstorm for me. I’ve got my last EVER academic exam tomorrow. I really want the snow to continue and let me skip school tomorrow, but I also want to get this exam over with.

We’ve been cooped up in the house since yesterday afternoon and I’m starting to go stir crazy.  D just re-wrapped the bars on his road bike – guess he wants out as well.  We were thinking about going to the YMCA for a run on the treadmills, but it’s closed for the storm.

I took a few pictures of the snow, but it’s really hard to capture the amount if you don’t know what our yard/street look like without it.  For my readers who’ve never seen snow, here you go.

We shoveled at about 2 pm, it’s 4 pm now and there’s been a light dusting since then, so I think we’re in the clear for the rest of the night.

See this pile? It was pushed across the road from a neighbour’s driveway onto the sidewalk at the property line between our house and the neighbour’s house. I’m a little annoyed. Yes, our town does plow our sidewalks a while after a storm, but that pile is easily 4 feet high.   I don’t think the little sidewalk snowplow is going to get through that. Hopefully the town will realise it’s from the neighbours, not us.

What else. We’ve had a bit of a tree debacle here at the Casa M-P.  We got a tree last week ad brought it in and started decorating it the next day.  While decorating it suddenly slid towards me. We spent a lot of time on our bellies trying to figure out what was wrong.

We finally figured out it was the stand – it’s got a serious structural failure in the form of a crack. We tried looking for a different/better one, but couldn’t find one. So our tree is now wedged in with a 2×4 and can’t get much water. I think it’s leaning back into the wall now, but at least it’s not as visible.

Ginger’s not impressed.

Cat Christmas

December 9, 2007

Fred and Ginger have started to suspect something’s up around here.   The humans brought in a tree and put it up in the corner.  In the back of their minds they remember presents under the tree, so yesterday afternoon they decided to tell me what they want for christmas.

Fred wants an Alpaca. Here he is showing me what he’ll do with an alpaca.

This next photo was taken about 15 minutes later. This gauge swatch has been here since March-ish- I haven’t shown you the FO since I bought the same yarn for my SP and didn’t want to let her know what I got her. I really should do a photo session of that FO.

Anyway, I digress, 15 minutes later, Fred is STILL attacking the alpaca. Not sure what he’d do with a full sized one – lick it to death? But he’s happy.

As I type he’s making little mewing sounds in the windowsill next to me.

Ginger’s more simple.

She wants a cat cave to be able to escape Fred’s licking.

Birfday Shoes

December 4, 2007

I’m a lucky girl.

In September, my original pair of Keen shoes started giving up the ghost. The worst was running from a friend’s apartment in the big city in order to catch the train and sliding down a set of stairs on my rear because my shoes didn’t grip the steps. Worse? It was right in front of a guy about my age who was horrified and trying to make sure I was OK while I was trying to get away to the train. Biggest damage? My ego.

So I set out on a hunt to replace the Keens. I didn’t want to get the same ones again when there are so many different ones available. I called around and searched all over, only to find that the store in my local mall had the largest selection.

One night D and I headed over and I debated and pondered. Sensible laceup, full coverage or fun maryjanes? Back and forth, the debate raged. I wear these shoes in all weather, hiking, school, you name it. I decided on sensible – they were to replace the originals remember?

D remembered the debate and for my birthday went back and got the fun ones. Meet the third pair of Keens in my life – Sydney II.

The main reason I wanted them? To show off hand knit socks of course.

Right foot – Honeymoon socks, Knitpicks sock memories in Mesa (discontinued). Wendyknits’ toe up socks with gusset, knit in 2×1 rib instead of stockinette.

Left Foot – Monkey socks from Knitty. Yarn is Regia Bamboo gifted from Nararabbit my SP8 spoiler.

I’m a lucky girl (or is it woman now that I’m 30?). I guess the birthday money I received from my aunt is going to be more yarn for handknit socks!

Turning 30.

December 2, 2007

yup. It’s here.

I’ve been trying to ignore it, but the days keep moving and somehow I’m turning 30 tomorrow.

I’m learning a lesson too. I had planned to have a “I’m 30 and you have to call me doctor now” party, but that went out the window with the project changes last year. The “I’m a master of something” party is also gone. So it’s a day.

My department is having the end of term potluck though, so I can pretend it’s a party for me! I’m not chickening out of bringing something because it’s my birthday either. I’ve got some chili on the stove. D and I were trying to figure out something that’s not a dessert that can be reheated in a microwave and would be potluck friendly and chili was the answer!

Then I’ve gt my class at U of T and my cousins in the city are going to meet up for dinner afterwards. Even E, my cousin who just started at U of T! YAY!

What else is going on.

We had big snow last night, but it’s supposed to start raining this afternoon with 25 mm (1 inch) of rain and temperature of 7C. We shoveled a little bit, but I’m hoping it’ll all melt so I don’t have to do any more!

The snowplow just came by and put a huge drift at the bottom of the drive – think I’m going to have to shovel that.

Knitting is going well. I’m doing Brooklyn Tweed’s Red Light special, but in grey with red, orange and yellow, all heathered colours from knitpicks. It’s going really fast. Then I’m going to tackle a Calorimetry from some fleece artist for me as well and a shetland triangle m- oh yeah – FOR ME!

img_1414-blog.jpg

D might end up with the red light special. He wasn’t keen on it at first but he’s liking how it came out. I always intended it to be for him, but shhh! don’t tell him. He took the picture and I forgot to tell him to stretch it out.

Guess I’d better go do some shoveling. Maybe I should wait for the waterproofing treatment on my jacket to be done? after we did the inital shoveling this morning we put our jackets in…. hmmm. nope, not dry. gotta shovel.

Anyone got an idea for a hobby for a 33 year old male?? anyone?
