I hesitated about writing about my accident. I really do think biking is great and that it’s a great way to get around and to get exercise. I’ve ridden 1877 kms this year as of right now. I’m still aiming for 3500 kms this year. It’s going to be hard to get there with all the school stuff going on.
But when I realised that I had to write a blog post and that it was the major thing that has happened in the past few weeks I figure I should mention it.
We went for a ride last Saturday to get a ride in while the weather was good. It was hot for the first weekend this summer, highs in the 30s and really humid. My cousin’s wedding was at 6pm so we set out early so I could nap and paint my toenails in the afternoon. Apparently the gods decided my toenails are pretty enough and they didn’t need painting.
We went out from the house, up the mountain and over some pretty big hills. We stopped for a popsicle about 35 kms in and started heading home. We passed a field of harvested cabbages and were discussing the stink and if broccoli would stink as much as the leftovers rot in the field. I noticed that I had drifted off the road and onto the shoulder. Drifting off was so easy and it was level, so I thought I’d just drift back on. Unfortunately there was a drop between the road and the shoulder where I drifted back on and I ended up flying through the air like superman.
I remember flying. I remember hitting the ground with my body and thinking “good, I didn’t hit my head”. Then my chin hit.
For the cyclists out there, the bike is fine.
I scraped my left knee, elbow, pointer knuckle and finger, thigh and my chin.
I sat on the road and caught my breath. Then got back on the bike and road the remaining 25 kms home.
I spent the afternoon getting drugged up, then D scrubbed all the dirt out in the shower. Owie! Then off to the drugstore to get one of every typeof bandage to find something that would cover up my wounds.
Off to the wedding where the bandaids dida good job of hiding the worst and we had a great time.
Now for the pictures… look away if you are squeemish.

My chin is almost healed 1 week later. Just a tiny scrape in the middle. The new hydrocolloid bandages really work.

I’m a PhD level pouter. See that lower lip in action? The cuts on the knuckle were the deepest and hurt most. They also are taking th longest to heal.
This is what the thigh wound became on Wednesday. It’s Sunday now, the cuts are 99% healed and the bruising is almost gone. Wow, I have great quads at this angle.
So it’s been a week and a day. I’m still wearing bandages, but I’m sleeping well now finally.I think by the middle of this week I’ll be back to normal.
D and I have been biking together for 8 years. This is the first major incident. I think that’s a really good record.
For making it through those pictures, I present my cousin G with his big catch from the cottage trip I mentioned in the last post.
There’s a lot going on at the Casa MP. I’ve got my thesis outlined. D’s working on a present/bribe for graduating. I’m also knitting up a storm. Hopefully I’ll have pictures this week if it EVER stops raining.

As a good knitter, I had a tape measure handy, so I can tell you it’s 14.5″ fish. I can’t remember what type, but it went back into the lake right after the picture was taken.
but the Icelandic lace is still a bit itchy post washing/blocking.
This is the aftermath. We were sleeping in the cabin about 50 feet from the main cottage until we awoke to my dad screaming. He was trying to scare off a young bear who was trying to break into the shed behind the cottage. It finally bumbled away when a light was shined in it’s eyes. We didn’t sleep for a few hours afterwards as the adrenaline was very high. D’s still laughing at me because I got up to lock the cabin door. He doesn’t think that would do much. I think it provided one more (tiny) bit of something holding the door shut.
